Schmitt exists because of a father-and-son argument. In 2003 the late Hans Selbach challenged his son Johannes, who preferred heavily selected Auslese, arguing that picking out the best bunches loses the terroir. Each made a wine his own way, they tasted the results after fermentation and aging, and Schmitt became the first of the estate's wines picked en bloc: the whole parcel harvested at once, with no selections taken out first. The parcel is a due-south-facing slice of the Zeltinger Schlossberg, almost as steep as the famous Rotlay in the Sonnenuhr, with old, ungrafted vines trained on single poles. They grow in deep, crumbly slate mixed with loam, right behind Zeltingen's church and village houses, which radiate warmth back into the vines. That setup invites comparison with the Bernkasteler Doctor. The 2013 was picked in November at Auslese ripeness, fermented with wild yeasts in traditional fuder casks and stainless steel, and bottled unfined. Its roughly 100 grams of residual sugar sit against about 10 grams of acidity, which is the kind of tension great sweet Mosel is all about.

Antonio Galloni

93 points

"Rich, smoky aromas of yellow plum, quince, apple blossom and sweet herbs. On the palate, a sumptuous nectarine flavor is enlivened by bright, salty minerality. At once generous and crisp on the persistent finish. Unique in its restrained level of residual sugar, this is my favorite of the four Ausleses here." —Joel B. Payne

Robert Parker

94 points

"The 2013 Zeltinger Schlossberg Riesling Schmitt, which was picked November 7, and contains almost 100 grams of residual sugar and 10 grams of acidity, starts shy on the nose, although the concentration and noble honey flavors already indicate a fine Auslese style here. The wine is noble sweet and very piquant on the palate, a lovely amalgam of sensual fruit intensity, racy acidity and stimulating salinity. Very precise and long; you'd better keep it for your children." —Stephan Reinhardt

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Spicy Thai larb or green papaya salad, Sichuan twice-cooked pork, roast pork belly with caramelized apples, seared foie gras, or a wedge of Roquefort or Stilton with walnuts.

Tasting Profile

Expect the classic sweet Mosel Riesling profile: ripe peach, apricot and citrus, a touch of honey and a smoky, stony slate edge. The palate is rich and sweet yet light-bodied, with bright, racy acidity keeping it fresh and balanced, and wild-yeast fermentation adds a little texture. The finish is typically long, juicy and lifted.

WINE GUIDES

German Wines

Is there a better grape than Riesling? Is there a better value? Its fruit purity, its perfume, and its mineral nuance are all unparalleled. And for centuries, the top German Rieslings were priced accordingly: at least as expensive as the top red wines of Bordeaux and Burgundy. But nowadays you could spend a lifetime exploring Germany’s great Riesling-producing regions while staying well within your budget. You might take an occasional break to try Germany’s other white grapes or perhaps a glass of Spätburgunder (the local name for Pinot Noir). It’s time to get started!
