This is Nino Barraco's front door: a fresh, easygoing white from dry-farmed organic vineyards in a part of Sicily most people know only for fortified wine. Nino's parents were farmers, not winemakers, and sold freshly fermented base wine to the big Marsala houses. He started bottling Marsala's native grapes himself in 2004, while the zone's vineyard area has shrunk by 45%. Fior di Bianco was his first wine to blend several varieties from several vineyards. The 2025 is 45% Grillo, 35% Catarratto, 15% Grecanico and 5% Zibibbo, from 3 hectares of vines scattered across the Marsala zone, between sea level and 150 meters, with Marsala's limestone sitting not far below the surface. The vines are never irrigated, so they have to find their water deep in the soil. Each variety was picked separately in the second half of August to keep the wine fresh, fermented on its own with no skin contact, aged in stainless steel, and blended just before bottling. Organic, dry-farmed native grapes in a wine this unfussy are exactly the kind of everyday bottle we like to have around.

More about Barraco

Nino Barraco's parents sold fermented wine to Marsala houses; Nino took over their vines in 2004 and flipped the script entirely. Organic farming, native Sicilian grapes—Grillo, Catarratto, Nero d'Avola—and natural winemaking with minimal sulfites. He's showing that Marsala's future lives in its own backyard, not in industrial producers' warehouses. Twenty hectares spread along the coast, 40,000 bottles yearly of pure potential.

Flatiron's Take

From the Importer

What Bowler Wine has to say about this wine:

The Fior di Bianco series, first produced in 2021, blends multiple varieties from 3ha of vineyards scattered throughout the Marsala zone. It's meant to be young, fresh, and accessible while also highly territorial. 52% Grillo, 15% Grecanico (including a new 1.5-ha vineyard with 50-yr-old vines), 15% Catarratto, 10% Inzolia, 8% Zibibbo. Separate fermentations for each variety. No maceration. All stainless aside from about 10% that went into wood.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Pasta con le sarde, grilled sardines with lemon and oregano, fried calamari, red prawn crudo with olive oil, or swordfish involtini.

Tasting Profile

Expect a bright, unoaked coastal white: lemon, green apple and white peach from the Grillo and Catarratto, with a light herbal, floral lift from the Grecanico. Aged in steel and picked early, it should be light to medium-bodied with crisp acidity and a salty, chalky edge, finishing dry and clean. Think of a more savoury, sea-breeze take on Pinot Grigio.
