Rosso di Montalcino is Brunello's earlier-drinking sibling — same Sangiovese, same vineyards, but younger and aimed straight at the dinner table. At Canalicchio di Sopra, the Ripaccioli family's Rosso is essentially a baby Brunello drawn primarily from their northern-zone Canalicchio vineyards (calcareous clay), with a small portion from Montosoli (free-draining galestro) in some vintages, with shorter aging that keeps the fruit fresh and the texture supple. The 2024 is a current release built for now: bright red cherry, herbal lift, fine-grained tannins, and the kind of energetic acidity that makes Sangiovese such a natural with food. A great way into one of Montalcino's most respected northern-zone producers without waiting on the Brunellos to come around.

"The 2024 Rosso di Montalcino marries the vintage's elegance with the pure and complex house style. Crushed black cherries and cedary spices meet lifting nuances of mint and dusty rose as this evolves in the glass. It’s silken and dense, with a wave of ripe red berry fruits and vibrant acidity underscored by crisp minerality. There’s a weight to the 2024 that adds presence, even as it finishes incredibly fresh, with hints of tart raspberry and a saline resonance. This is a baby Brunello by every stretch of the imagination." —Eric Guido

More about Canalicchio di Sopra

Canalicchio di Sopra is the north side of Montalcino in a bottle: two contrasting crus, cooler slopes, and Brunello with tension and silky tannins rather than brute power. It's one of the area's most respected traditional estates, and a family affair from the start.

Primo Pacenti founded the estate in 1962 and was one of the twelve founders of the Brunello di Montalcino Consorzio in 1967. His son-in-law Pier Luigi Ripaccioli followed, and today his grandchildren Francesco, Marco and Simonetta run things, with Francesco in the cellar and Marco in the vineyards.

They farm about 19 hectares of Sangiovese, and only Sangiovese, in two places. The Canalicchio cru around the winery sits at roughly 280 to 320 meters on mineral-rich clay. Montosoli, the famous neighboring hill, sits lower on lime-rich marl and galestro and brings structure, minerality and sapidity. The straight Brunello usually blends the two, while single-vineyard bottlings from Montosoli and La Casaccia show each side on its own. Fermentation is in stainless steel and aging in large, older casks, so the oak never gets in the way.

The Rosso is the early-drinking way in; the Brunellos reward a decade or more in the cellar.

Flatiron's Take

From the Importer

What has to say about this wine:

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Pappardelle with ragu, grilled lamb chops, pizza margherita, herb-roasted chicken, or a charcuterie board. Sangiovese's all-purpose acidity makes this a serious weeknight wine for tomato-based and grilled-meat cooking alike.

Tasting Profile

Bright red cherry, raspberry, wild strawberry, and a flicker of dried herb over notes of clay and crushed stone. The palate is medium-bodied and energetic with fine-grained tannins, vibrant acidity, and a clean, savory, mineral-tinged finish.
