A skin-touched white from Istine, the Radda estate run by the charming Angela Fronti, who has brought a jolt of energy to Chianti Classico. The Bianco d'Istine is made from Trebbiano and Malvasia off a small organically farmed vineyard in Radda partly planted back in 1984. The grapes get a few days of skin maceration in stainless steel before pressing into terracotta amphorae to finish, with aging split between amphora and steel for texture and freshness. It's a characterful, low-key Tuscan white from a producer far better known for Sangiovese, and exactly the kind of off-the-radar bottle worth seeking out.

More about Istine

Angela Fronti studied enology, and her family had long managed vineyards for other Tuscan estates. She convinced them to bottle their own fruit, and Istine was born. Today about 25 hectares of scattered parcels around Radda and Gaiole, certified organic and planted mainly to Sangiovese, produce elegant Chianti Classico, with each vineyard cru bottled to tell its own story. Precision and terroir from the new generation of Chianti.
