Al Forte is a Bramaterra in all but name. It comes from the highest vineyard in the appellation and is made just like one, then declassified to Coste della Sesia because the site gives a fruitier wine that's ready to drink young. Le Pianelle calls it their fresh, fruity take on the flagship Bramaterra, with more Croatina in the blend. The estate's vines grow in acidic marine and volcanic sands, yellow-orange to brown, which is the opposite of the basic soils of the Langhe. Dieter Heuskel and Peter Dipoli built the estate from scratch: they bought an abandoned vineyard in Brusnengo in 2004 and went on to piece together more than fifty small parcels from over forty owners. Their usual approach to Al Forte is the region's traditional one: spontaneous fermentation, time in French oak, then a spell in bottle. If you're curious about Nebbiolo from Piedmont's north, this is the easiest way in, and you don't have to cellar it.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Tajarin with butter and sage or a meat ragù; agnolotti del plin; panissa (Vercelli risotto with beans and salami); grilled sausages or lamb chops; a grilled steak with rosemary.

Tasting Profile

Expect the bright, fruit-forward side of northern Piedmont Nebbiolo: red cherry, plum and raspberry from the Croatina, a peppery, floral lift from the Vespolina, and a hint of spice from time in French oak. It's typically medium-bodied, with lively acidity and fine, gentle tannins, and finishes dry and fresh. Think of it as a lighter, juicier, more approachable cousin of Barolo.
