A Fleurie from the decade when Jean-Louis Dutraive found the style that made him, for many of his fellow growers, the heart of Beaujolais β€” the 2010-2016 run that inspired a generation of local growers and carried well beyond Beaujolais. "Champagne" is a lieu-dit, not a sparkling wine: a granite-sand parcel of old vines just downhill from the family's Clos de la Grand'Cour, and the smallest piece of land the Dutraives own. The domaine's Fleurie sites sit on softer, lower slopes with deeper sandy soils, which is why these bottlings lean aromatic and elegant rather than brawny β€” though Dutraive being Dutraive, there's still plush fruit and real tannin under the perfume. The farming and cellar work here is what Jean-Louis calls "low intervention, high surveillance": hand harvest, fruit into tank cold for carbonic maceration without sulfur, native yeasts, Γ©levage in used Burgundy barrels. These wines are built to go ten years and more, and mature along the lines of a great Volnay.

More about J.L. Dutraive (Grand'Cour)

Since 1989, Jean-Louis Dutraive has been the heart of Beaujolais, a cornerstone of the region's organic and natural-wine renaissance. His Domaine de la Grand'Cour, already ancient when he took it over in 1989, is farmed organically with official certification from 2009. Alongside childhood friends Marcel Lapierre, Jean Foillard, and others, Dutraive proved that Beaujolais could produce world-class wine without chemistry.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Roast duck breast with cherries, coq au vin, charcuterie and pΓ’tΓ© de campagne, mushroom risotto, roast chicken with thyme, or a plate of ComtΓ© and Saint-Marcellin.

Tasting Profile

Dry red with perfumed red-fruit and floral aromatics. Medium-bodied and plush in texture, with bright acidity and fine, gently gripping tannin. The finish is long and mineral, with a dusty, slightly wild edge typical of the house.
