JB Becker, Riesling Oberberg Kabinett Halbtrocken, 2015

A mature, half-dry Riesling from HaJo Becker, the Rheingau master who returned to the family estate in 1971 to make bone-dry, site-specific wines decades before the dry Grosses Gewachs era made them fashionable. This Oberberg Kabinett Halbtrocken comes from a vineyard in Walluf, farmed organically with indigenous yeasts and long elevage in neutral cask. With a touch more residual sugar (still likely only around 15 grams) than Becker's bone-dry bottlings, the fruit sits front and center, and a decade of age has carried it into a lovely, mature, fresh phase. A pre-arrival library release for lovers of classical German Riesling. ETA September 2026.

"From a site above the Walkenberg, this signals aromatically the combination of nutty piquancy, nippy cress and a slight aura of mothball that shares billing on a polished palate with Riesling-typical lemon and white peach. The latter are nicely supported by the wine’s discreet residual sugar, without any overt sense of sweetness. A sustained finish, underlain by wet stone, invigorates and refreshes." —David Schildknecht

More about JB Becker

Hans-Josef Becker was pioneering dry Riesling in the 1970s when everyone else wanted sweetness. Now, decades later, his nervy, structured Rheingau wines are recognized as some of Germany's best. The wines are organic, hand-harvested, and aged in traditional barrels—they prove that dry Riesling improves for decades in the cellar.

WINE GUIDES

German Wines

Is there a better grape than Riesling? Is there a better value? Its fruit purity, its perfume, and its mineral nuance are all unparalleled. And for centuries, the top German Rieslings were priced accordingly: at least as expensive as the top red wines of Bordeaux and Burgundy. But nowadays you could spend a lifetime exploring Germany’s great Riesling-producing regions while staying well within your budget. You might take an occasional break to try Germany’s other white grapes or perhaps a glass of Spätburgunder (the local name for Pinot Noir). It’s time to get started!
