If you want to understand why HaJo Becker is a legend, start here: a bone-dry Kabinett from his home turf that shows the radically dry, mineral style he pioneered decades before Germany's dry Grosses Gewachs were crowned. The Rheinberg site sits in Walluf in the Rheingau, farmed organically with indigenous yeasts and aged long in neutral cask. Flatiron's Stephen Bitterolf tasting note for this 2015 calls it "herbal, almost weedy and subterranean," yet full of freshness, power, and structure, just coming into a great drinking window at ten years old with decades ahead. A pre-arrival library release for serious dry-Riesling lovers. ETA September 2026.

More about JB Becker

Hans-Josef Becker was pioneering dry Riesling in the 1970s when everyone else wanted sweetness. Now, decades later, his nervy, structured Rheingau wines are recognized as some of Germany's best. The wines are organic, hand-harvested, and aged in traditional barrels—they prove that dry Riesling improves for decades in the cellar.

WINE GUIDES

German Wines

Is there a better grape than Riesling? Is there a better value? Its fruit purity, its perfume, and its mineral nuance are all unparalleled. And for centuries, the top German Rieslings were priced accordingly: at least as expensive as the top red wines of Bordeaux and Burgundy. But nowadays you could spend a lifetime exploring Germany’s great Riesling-producing regions while staying well within your budget. You might take an occasional break to try Germany’s other white grapes or perhaps a glass of Spätburgunder (the local name for Pinot Noir). It’s time to get started!
