The 2022 Joseph Drouhin Marquis de Laguiche Montrachet Grand Cru is a stunning example of Chardonnay at its zenith, hailing from the most prestigious white wine vineyard in Burgundy. This iconic Grand Cru, managed by the historic house of Joseph Drouhin under the Marquis de Laguiche label, showcases the extraordinary potential of the Montrachet terroir—characterized by its ideal south-southeast exposure and limestone-rich soils. This wine represents the pinnacle of elegance, complexity, and precision.

In the glass, the wine reveals a radiant golden hue with shimmering reflections. The nose is profoundly aromatic and layered, offering a symphony of ripe white peach, golden apple, and citrus zest, interwoven with floral notes of acacia and honeysuckle, alongside hints of toasted almonds, vanilla, and flinty minerality. On the palate, it is powerful yet supremely balanced, with a creamy texture and vibrant acidity that provides lift and freshness. Flavors of orchard fruits, lemon curd, and a touch of honey are complemented by a chalky minerality and subtle oak nuances, leading to an extraordinarily long, elegant finish that lingers with finesse and complexity.

The 2022 vintage, marked by warm growing conditions and ideal ripening, has imparted a generous fruit profile to this wine while preserving its hallmark freshness and precision. This Montrachet is a sublime pairing for haute cuisine, such as lobster in beurre blanc, foie gras, or truffle-infused dishes. While already compelling in its youth for its vibrancy and luxurious texture, this Grand Cru has the structure and depth to evolve over the next 15–20 years or more, offering increasing layers of complexity with age. Joseph Drouhin’s Marquis de Laguiche Montrachet is a true masterpiece, embodying the grandeur of Burgundy’s finest terroir.

Joseph Drouhin is, of course, one of the great names of Burgundy. A rare producer that makes fantastic wines across the whole range of prices. Their Musigny is one of Burgundy's most sought-after bottles. But their "everyday-priced" wines are some of the greatest values year in and year out. And in between those extremes, they have a whole range of perfectly terroir expressive wines that over-deliver for price, including gems like the legendary Cotes their Beaune Clos des Mouches, offering close to Grand Cru quality at decidedly lower prices.

Professional Reviews

Robert Parker

RP 96
"The 2022 Montrachet Marquis de Laguiche Grand Cru was harvested in three picks this year. Exhibiting aromas of pear, peach, honeycomb, toasted nuts, baking spices and buttered toast, it's full-bodied, ample and unctuous, with a richly layered core of fruit, lively acids and a long, resonant finish. Tasted from a barrel sample before an aerating racking, it displayed fine tension."
