Bedell made history when its 2009 Merlot was poured at President Obama's 2013 Inaugural Luncheon, the first New York wine ever served at a presidential inauguration. Kip and Susan Bedell planted their first vines in Cutchogue in 1980, and Kip earned the nickname 'Mr. Merlot'. Winemaker Rich Olsen-Harbich is North Fork royalty: he wrote the proposal that created the North Fork of Long Island AVA, approved in 1986. Bedell remains a benchmark for a region that deserves more respect than it gets.
