Keller, Riesling Trocken Von der Fels', 2021

Flatiron has called this one a baby GG for years, and that's exactly what it is: bone-dry Riesling drawn from young vines in Keller's grand cru (Grosse Lage) sites, at a fraction of the ask for the wines above it. Von der Fels means "from the rock," and the rock is limestone — the south-facing limestone slopes of Rheinhessen, with clay and loess in the mix. Klaus-Peter Keller's dry Rieslings have earned the estate a reputation as Rheinhessen's greatest address, and it's telling that when asked which bottle a newcomer should start with, he names this one. The style he's after, in his own words, is soil-marked, with energy, elegance and refinement. Seventy percent of the estate's vineyard is classified Grosses Gewachs, which means the young vines feeding this wine are sitting in some very exalted dirt. A family operation, ten generations deep, with three generations currently under one roof.

Antonio Galloni

"About half of this Riesling comes from Kirchspiel (representing most of the Keller’s vines in that site that aren’t close to seventy years old), with the rest mostly from Hubacker; but the other Westhofen crus are also marginally represented. Apple and white peach aromas are laced with basil and mint in an alluring aromatic display. Zesty lime, ginger and coriander seed serve for startling inner-mouth stimulation and striking vivacity against a background of satiny, glossy richness. The finish grips cheek-tuggingly, deploying pip- and pit-piquancy for maximum stimulation, while delivering consummate refreshment." —David Schildknecht

Jancis Robinson

"Green fruits and deep citrus but with a mineral character that is more oily than stony. Richer and more spicy than in some vintages. There’s power in this wine that would probably be a Grosses Gewächs in the portfolio of most other producers. Then after that powerful first impression, it pulls in tight and fresh on the finish. A lot of impact initially. Then great freshness on the finish."

More about Keller

Klaus Peter Keller runs Rheinhessen's greatest address, and his dry Rieslings are so crystalline and deep that Jancis Robinson calls them the Montrachets of Germany. Seventy percent of his vineyard is classified Grosses Gewächs, and every bottling proves the point: this is German wine at its most majestic.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Roast chicken with herbs, trout or halibut in brown butter, pork loin with mustard sauce. Also excellent with sushi and sashimi, raw oysters, and a green salad with fresh goat cheese.

Tasting Profile

Dry and mineral-driven, with citrus, white peach and orchard fruit over a clear wet-stone note. Medium-light in body, with bright, taut acidity and a chalky, faintly salty grip from the limestone. The finish is long and precise.

WINE GUIDES

German Wines

Is there a better grape than Riesling? Is there a better value? Its fruit purity, its perfume, and its mineral nuance are all unparalleled. And for centuries, the top German Rieslings were priced accordingly: at least as expensive as the top red wines of Bordeaux and Burgundy. But nowadays you could spend a lifetime exploring Germany’s great Riesling-producing regions while staying well within your budget. You might take an occasional break to try Germany’s other white grapes or perhaps a glass of Spätburgunder (the local name for Pinot Noir). It’s time to get started!
