Same great slate hill, gentler register. This Kabinett comes from the same Im Pitterberg monopole as Kruger-Rumpf's bone-dry grand cru, but the grapes are picked earlier and left in the classic fruity style, with a modest cushion of residual sugar and low alcohol around nine percent. That makes it a featherweight, the kind of Riesling you can pour at noon or drink through an evening without it wearing you out. The blue-grey Devonian slate keeps it mineral and lithe rather than sweet-for-sweet's-sake. Delicate, low-proof, and endlessly refreshing.

More about Kruger-Rumpf

Georg Rumpf inherited a vineyard tradition and turned it into something radical: organic viticulture in Germany's Nahe region. The family's 70 hectares produce Rieslings and whites with real character and freshness, made by someone who studied at Geisenheim and actually believes in what he's doing. No theater, just honest wine.

WINE GUIDES

German Wines

Is there a better grape than Riesling? Is there a better value? Its fruit purity, its perfume, and its mineral nuance are all unparalleled. And for centuries, the top German Rieslings were priced accordingly: at least as expensive as the top red wines of Bordeaux and Burgundy. But nowadays you could spend a lifetime exploring Germany’s great Riesling-producing regions while staying well within your budget. You might take an occasional break to try Germany’s other white grapes or perhaps a glass of Spätburgunder (the local name for Pinot Noir). It’s time to get started!
