Max Kilburg, Riesling Goldtropchen Grand Cru Trocken, 2024

The other half of Max Kilburg's Grand Cru dry Riesling pair, and an outright Mosel landmark. Piesporter Goldtropfchen wraps an amphitheater around the village of Piesport on a long outer bend of the river, all southeast-to-southwest exposures on deep, dark Devon slate veined with quartz. Where Kilburg's Ohligsberg is dark and architectural, Goldtropfchen is brighter and more fragrant: stone fruit, spice, herbs, a lithe and piercing line. Max, a 20th-generation grower trained by Julian Haart, makes this in dry Grand Cru style from old vines on the steepest gradients. The 2024 vintage was tiny but high-quality. A serious, electric Mosel white with both the sun and the slate of one of Germany's most storied sites.

More about Max Kilburg

Max Kilburg, a 20th-generation winemaker on the Mosel, is one of the brightest young stars of German Riesling. He farms his family's Geierslay estate and his own micro-project—just 1.2 hectares of old-vine Grand Cru parcels. His Rieslings taste like pure slate and mineral electricity. Authentic, unshowy, unforgettable.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Beautiful with steamed shellfish, sea bass crudo, or salmon with herbs. The spice and lift also work with Vietnamese summer rolls, lemongrass chicken, pork schnitzel, and a wedge of mountain cheese.

Tasting Profile

Bright stone fruit (yellow peach, apricot), citrus oils, a brush of fresh herbs, and a piercing slate core. Dry, lithe, and electric on the palate, with deep mineral length and a long, fragrant, mineral-spiced finish.

WINE GUIDES

German Wines

Is there a better grape than Riesling? Is there a better value? Its fruit purity, its perfume, and its mineral nuance are all unparalleled. And for centuries, the top German Rieslings were priced accordingly: at least as expensive as the top red wines of Bordeaux and Burgundy. But nowadays you could spend a lifetime exploring Germany’s great Riesling-producing regions while staying well within your budget. You might take an occasional break to try Germany’s other white grapes or perhaps a glass of Spätburgunder (the local name for Pinot Noir). It’s time to get started!
