Some of these vines grow in Fortin, across from La Dominique and 300 meters from Cheval Blanc. That's a very grand address for a family estate that has never made a fuss about itself. Château Haut-Segottes stands out for another reason too: most of its vineyard is Merlot, but the Grand Cru is usually majority Cabernet Franc, often around 65%. That gives the wine real structure and a long life in the cellar, which is unusual for the Right Bank. Danielle Meunier is the fourth generation of her family to run the estate. She took over in 1972, at a time when the estate's oenologist was teaching her winemaking and helping her find her way into a trade dominated by men. She still farms iron-rich sandy-clay soils with a trio of long-serving "gardeners," picking by hand. The farming is organic. Rosenthal Wine Merchant has been buying from her since the 1977 vintage, which says a lot about how steady her wines are. If you want serious Saint-Émilion without the trophy-label markup, this is it, and it is built for years in the cellar.

More about Chateau Haut Segottes

A Saint-Émilion classic with a Cabernet Franc accent. Danielle Meunier, the fourth generation of her family at the helm, farms nine hectares in the Saint-Émilion Grand Cru appellation, including the Fortin parcel across from La Dominique and about 300 meters from Cheval Blanc. The vineyard is planted roughly 60% Merlot, 35% Cabernet Franc and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon, a higher share of Franc than many neighbors. Elegant, old-school, age-worthy Saint-Émilion at a fair price.

Flatiron's Take

From the Importer

What Rosenthal Wine Merchant has to say about this wine:

Tradition reigns at Château Haut-Segottes. Harvest is manual; fermentation takes place in cuve; wines are rotated into barrel for an élevage of 18 months; approximately 20% of the barrels are new; wines are bottled unfiltered. Although the majority of the vineyards are planted to Merlot, the ultimate cuvée bottled as Saint-Émilion Grand Cru features a majority of Cabernet Franc. This dominance of Cabernet Franc, frequently on the order of 65%, produces a wine of considerable structure and is exceptionally age-worthy.
