This is the Cheval Blanc team's other Saint-Emilion, and the 2019 comes a full decade into the complete replanting they started the year after they bought the estate. They bought Quinault L'Enclos in 2008 as a project to stimulate and challenge their flagship. Since 2011 it has even been poured en primeur alongside its famous sibling. The site is an oddity in the appellation: a 19-hectare urban vineyard on gravel inside the town of Libourne, right beside the Dordogne. The 2019 is 74% Merlot with 14% Cabernet Sauvignon and 12% Cabernet Franc. If you're curious what Cheval Blanc's people can do with a different piece of ground, this is a far more accessible way in than the flagship.

Antonio Galloni

"The 2019 Quinault l'Enclos comes across a bit flat on the nose compared to its peers, smudged mulberry and blackberry scents, a touch of stewed black tea. The palate is toasty and almost Rhône-like, peppery, quite fat with a concentrated, voluminous finish. Just lacks some elegance and class. I wonder if this is representative? I include a question mark against my score. Tasted blind at the Southwold annual tasting." —Neal Martin

Robert Parker

"Aromas of sweet cherries, rose petals, violets and dark chocolate introduce the 2019 Quinault l'Enclos, a medium to full-bodied, ample and lively wine that's produced by Cheval Blanc's winemaking team." —William Kelley

Jancis Robinson

"Tasted blind. Rich and broad and winning with real depth as well as ripeness but not at all heavy or sickly. Good attack. Though lighter tannic charge than some." —Jancis Robinson MW

Decanter

"This has intense aromatics and supple tannins. A little subdued at first, then the floral side begins to burgeon out of the glass. Supple and fresh, nuanced blue and red berry fruits, with strength and precision. Harvest September 10 to October 2. A yield of 41hl/ha. Aged in 500l casks and larger 20hl foudres, 50% new oak." —Jane Anson

Wine Spectator

90 points

"Round and ripe in feel, with a savory streak amid cassis, cherry and plum compote notes, while tobacco and red licorice wrap up the finish. Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. Drink now."

More about Chateau Quinault L'Enclos

Quinault L'Enclos is an oddity in Saint-Émilion: a 19-hectare walled vineyard inside the town of Libourne. Alain Raynaud revived it from 1997, and in 2008 the owners of Château Cheval Blanc, Bernard Arnault and Albert Frère, bought it and set Cheval Blanc's team to work restructuring the vineyard. It became a Saint-Émilion Grand Cru Classé in 2012. The result has been quiet excellence: refined wines that drink beautifully young and age gracefully.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Roast leg of lamb with garlic and rosemary, duck breast with a cherry sauce, grilled ribeye with bordelaise, or a wild mushroom and beef ragout over pappardelle.

Tasting Profile

Expect the classic Merlot-led Saint-Emilion profile: plum, black cherry and cassis, with a fresh, gravelly edge and hints of graphite and herbs from the Cabernets. Typically full-bodied yet elegant, with ripe, fine-grained tannins and lively acidity, finishing dry and long. Built to age, though the plush Merlot fruit makes it approachable earlier than many Left Bank Bordeaux.
