This is Quinault L'Enclos before Cheval Blanc: a 2001 from the Alain Raynaud years at the estate that Cheval Blanc's owners went on to buy in 2008. Raynaud rebuilt the property, switched to hand-picking and took the old vines seriously, and Cheval Blanc's team clearly liked what they saw. They bought it to stimulate and challenge their own flagship, and they started restructuring the vineyard in 2009. Quinault is an oddity in Saint-Emilion: a 19-hectare urban vineyard inside the town of Libourne, on gravelly ground by the Dordogne, just six kilometres from Cheval Blanc. The estate is one walled block (the "enclos" in the name), with some parcels planted back in 1934. The 2001 is a dry, full-bodied red built on 80% Merlot. If you're curious about what drew Cheval Blanc down the road, this back-vintage bottle from before the takeover is a great piece of the story.

Robert Parker

92 points

"This blend of 80% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 10% Cabernet Franc owes much of its extraordinary quality to the impeccable perfectionist efforts of Quinault’s owners, Dr. Alain Raynaud and his wife, Francoise. The 37-acre vineyard, situated within the Libourne city limits, includes some of the appellation’s oldest vines. This wine enjoys all of the state of the art, cutting edge winemaking techniques (i.e., cold fermentation, malolactic in barrel, aging on its lees, and no fining or filtration). Yields are kept to a modest 40 hectoliters per hectare. The 2001 is a worthy rival to the 2000. Deep purple to the rim, this vibrant red boasts a gorgeous bouquet of striking minerality intermixed with raspberries, blackberries, and hints of blueberries, espresso roast, and oak. Medium-bodied, elegant, and pure, with an intense mid-palate as well as a long finish, it needs 2-3 years of cellaring, and should drink well for 12-15 years." —Robert M. Parker, Jr.

More about Chateau Quinault L'Enclos

Quinault L'Enclos is an oddity in Saint-Émilion: a 19-hectare walled vineyard inside the town of Libourne. Alain Raynaud revived it from 1997, and in 2008 the owners of Château Cheval Blanc, Bernard Arnault and Albert Frère, bought it and set Cheval Blanc's team to work restructuring the vineyard. It became a Saint-Émilion Grand Cru Classé in 2012. The result has been quiet excellence: refined wines that drink beautifully young and age gracefully.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Roast leg of lamb with rosemary and garlic, duck confit with lentils, beef bourguignon, wild mushroom risotto, or a wedge of aged Comté.

Tasting Profile

Expect the plush, Merlot-led Saint-Emilion style: ripe plum, black cherry and blackcurrant, with earthy, leathery and tobacco notes as wines like this mature. Typically full-bodied and dry, with rounded, supple tannins and balanced acidity, finishing long and savoury. Think a softer-edged, more velvety take on classic claret.
