Ulli Stein is a living legend of the Mosel, farming heroically steep, slate-filled vineyards with a stubborn devotion to tradition. This Rose Secco is his fun side: a lightly sparkling, dry pink fizz that takes the seriousness out of his lineup without losing the Mosel's signature mineral cut. Bright red fruit, brisk acidity, an easy frizzante sparkle. It's an unbeatable warm-weather aperitif. Serve it very cold and drink it now.

More about Stein

Ulli Stein is a Mosel rebel who spent eight years battling the wine authorities, from 2001 until EU rules changed in 2009, for the right to make traditional straw wine. He farms about 6.5 hectares of steep slate around Alf and Sankt Aldegund, including the vertiginous Palmberg terraces, and most of his Riesling vines are ungrafted, some planted around 1900. The wines run from bone-dry to feinherb and sweet, all with laser-focused precision. Winemaking as defiance.

WINE GUIDES

German Wines

Is there a better grape than Riesling? Is there a better value? Its fruit purity, its perfume, and its mineral nuance are all unparalleled. And for centuries, the top German Rieslings were priced accordingly: at least as expensive as the top red wines of Bordeaux and Burgundy. But nowadays you could spend a lifetime exploring Germany’s great Riesling-producing regions while staying well within your budget. You might take an occasional break to try Germany’s other white grapes or perhaps a glass of Spätburgunder (the local name for Pinot Noir). It’s time to get started!
