'Les Enfers Tranquilles' (The Tranquil Hells) refers to the ancient tuffeau limestone caves where Michel Autran ages his wines—and perhaps to the quiet intensity of this still, dry Chenin Blanc. Vouvray's chalky soils impart a mineral nervosity that keeps the wine taut despite its richness. Extended aging on fine lees adds texture and complexity without masking the purity of the fruit. Expect ripe pear, quince, honeycomb, and a chalky finish that lingers. Autran's minimal-intervention approach lets the vintage and terroir speak clearly. Decant briefly to open.

More about Michel Autran

An emergency room doctor who traded the chaos of trauma for the quiet intensity of Vouvray. Michel spent twenty years as a physician before the wine bug bit hard enough that he jumped ship in his 40s. He studied under some of France's best Chenin makers, then planted his own vines on near-vertical slopes in Noizay. His focus: dry Chenins of pure mineral precision, biodynamically farmed with a horse. A second career that matters.
