Pergole Torte isn’t just Montevertine’s flagship—it’s a Sangiovese love letter that’s earned its place in the cult wine canon. And this 3L bottling of the 2021 vintage is the perfect combo of epic and (barely) manageable: large enough to turn heads, small enough to fit in your cellar.

2021 was a return to classic Tuscan balance—cooler, more refined, with gorgeous fruit and elegance to spare. This vintage of Pergole Torte hums with cherry purity, rose petals, crushed herbs, and silky tannins. There’s depth here, but it’s all about grace, not power.

And in 3L, the aging curve stretches out beautifully. This is Sangiovese with soul and swagger, wrapped in one of the most recognizable labels in the wine world. Whether you’re drinking it in five years or fifteen, it’ll make the moment feel like something worth framing.

Antonio Galloni

98 points

"The 2021 Le Pergole Torte is a real stunner. Rich, deep and beautifully layered in the glass, the 2021 is captivating from the very first taste. In bottle, this is quite a bit more reticent than it was as a barrel sample, which, in my view, is a positive. Even so, readers should be prepared to cellar the 2021 for a number of years at a minimum." —Antonio Galloni

Robert Parker

"Beautifully saturated and rich in terms of complexity (but not in extraction), the Montevertine 2021 Le Pergole Torte remains focused and elegantly streamlined with a very bright-red cherry element that defines this classic vintage. There are tart fruit flavors to close, followed by firm but silky tannins. A hint of the skins also comes through on the bouquet and adds a little more weight and substance. This wine (which is worked in cement vats, oak cask and Allier barrique) finishes with polished slate-like mineral nuances." —Monica Larner

More about Montevertine

Pure expression of Radda terroir through an act of principle. When Sergio Manetti refused to add Trebbiano to his Sangiovese blend, Montevertine had to leave the Chianti Classico consortium. But he also liberated himself from rules—and proved that one grape, farmed with passion, could represent a place more honestly than compromise wines. The result: a three-decade cult following and some of Tuscany's most elegant Sangiovese.

Flatiron's Take

From the Importer

What Rosenthal Wine Merchant has to say about this wine:

The prestige wine of Montevertine is only produced in outstanding vintages. This ultimate wine is aged in large Slavonian oak barrels for 18 months and then racked into small French oak (Allier) barrels for the final six month stage of its élevage. It is produced primarily from a two hectare vineyard planted in 1968 exclusively to Sangiovese vines with a north-northeast exposure.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Grilled ribeye, venison steak, braised beef, wild boar, aged hard cheeses

Tasting Profile

Structured and powerful with dark cherry, plum, and mineral character. Full body with firm tannins and balanced acidity. Finish is very long and complex.

You probably already know about Montevertine. It has been one Tuscany's brightest stars for decades, on the forefront of every movement that has made the region what it is today. They stepped out of the consorzio because of their belief in Sangiovese, helping to create the Super-Tuscan movement. They have always sought to express their distinct Radda terroir, laying the foundation for today's growing interest in Chianti's varied crus (and especially in Radda!).
