Are you a wine geek? Have you ever debated the merits of Mosel and Chablis? Ever hypothetically imagined Riesling grown in Chablis, or Chardonnay grown on the steep slopes of the Mosel? Well great, because we've got your answer: Der Bauer.

It is a mind-bending, soulful expression of Sankt Aldegunder Himmelreich, crafted through an entirely new lens. It clearly evokes the best parts of Chablis - lobster tail, lemon, cream, and then raises the bar with the crackling energy of first rate Riesling, with the salty, slatey minerality of a top Mosel vineyard.

Stoney and pithy, with a steely sharp core of acidity, a forceful amount of tension, buffered with a slightly rounder mid palate from extended lees aging and then perfectly coalesced, thanks to 22 months in used tonneaux.

Der Bauer or "The Farmer" is a nod to the villagers of vineyard. Lardot and Curtin have 7 parcels here ranging from an estimated 60-100 year old, all un-grafted vines, with fruit trees and vegetable gardens scattered throughout. There is a photo below of the giant, sun baked fig I picked off a tree in the vineyard and ate on our hike up the steep slopes.

More about Philip Lardot

Philip Lardot was born in Finland, grew up in Amsterdam, moved to Copenhagen to work for a natural wine importer, then went to Burgundy for a harvest before landing in Clemens Busch's vineyard in Moselle. He never left. With wife Rosalie Curtin, he farms five hectares on Moselle's steep slopes as a natural wine producer. The project is small, serious, and built on a path that wandered across Europe before finding its true home in German terroir.

WINE GUIDES

German Wines

Is there a better grape than Riesling? Is there a better value? Its fruit purity, its perfume, and its mineral nuance are all unparalleled. And for centuries, the top German Rieslings were priced accordingly: at least as expensive as the top red wines of Bordeaux and Burgundy. But nowadays you could spend a lifetime exploring Germany’s great Riesling-producing regions while staying well within your budget. You might take an occasional break to try Germany’s other white grapes or perhaps a glass of Spätburgunder (the local name for Pinot Noir). It’s time to get started!
