Nebbiolo, Piedmont's top variety, is one of the three great red grapes of Italy. It is responsible for the superstar wines of Barolo and Barbaresco as well as many more more humble but often super-delicious wines (like Langhe Nebbiolo). It is also the key grape in the Alte Piemonte, Piedmont's mountainous neighbor, and Lombardy's Valtellina region, which produces a distinct but equally wonderful expression of the grape.
