Sauternes pedigree in a bone-dry bottle: this is the dry white from Château Suduiraut, a Sauternes Premier Cru whose vineyard sits on the slope next to Yquem. The Sauternes name is reserved for sweet wine, so this one goes out under a plain Bordeaux Blanc label. That makes it one of the easiest ways into a great estate's house style. The fruit comes from a single plot of vines averaging 20 years old, on fine gravel and sand, a soil the estate credits with bringing out fruit and freshness. The 2023 is 57% Semillon, 30% Sauvignon Blanc and 13% Sauvignon Gris. It spent six months in a mix of 70% vats and 30% barrels, with regular stirring of the fine lees. It was a tough year, with April frost and then a rainy, hot July that brought severe mildew. The estate still saved most of the crop, and a cool, overcast early August kept more malic acid in the grapes than in 2022. Suduiraut makes this cuvée to be enjoyed right away, so open it young rather than cellaring it.

Tasting Profile

Expect the fresh, gourmand style of a Semillon-based dry white Bordeaux: lemon, white peach and a gently waxy note, with a light creaminess from lees stirring and only a subtle touch of oak. It's typically medium-bodied with bright acidity and finishes dry, clean and citrusy. It's made to be enjoyed young.
