A 1962 Armagnac is the kind of bottle that turns a birthday, an anniversary or a long dinner into an occasion, and this one comes from a family house that still distills in its home village. Delord works out of Lannepax, the family's native village in Armagnac country in southwest France, and runs its stills in the depths of winter. It is one of the only Armagnac houses to use both the region's traditional continuous column still and double distillation. The column stills are kept for the old Armagnacs, and one of them is a Sier still dating from 1900. The oldest vintages are moved into glass demijohns and kept out of the light in a room called "Paradise" (we can think of worse places to spend retirement). For anyone marking a year that began in 1962, Vieille Reserve with that date on the label is hard to beat.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Sip it after dinner alongside Agen prunes (soaked in Armagnac if you're feeling generous), a walnut tart, or a few squares of dark chocolate. It also works with a slice of aged Mimolette at the end of a long meal.

Tasting Profile

Expect what long-aged, column-distilled Armagnac typically delivers: dried prune, fig and candied orange peel, with walnut, leather, cocoa and the savoury, nutty "rancio" that only long years in oak bring. Think of an older Cognac, but earthier and more rustic. The palate is usually mellow and silky, with gentle spice and a long, warming finish that fades slowly.
