This is Leonetti's flagship Reserve from 1998, a year the winery called one of the finest vintages in Washington wine history. It's a chance to taste a mature bottle from Washington Cabernet's early days, made by the people who helped start them. The Reserve is the house's top wine, blended only from the best barrels, and Leonetti says it makes one only in vintages it thinks are worthy. 1998 was one of those years. The winery describes it as a winemaker's dream in the Walla Walla Valley: very warm, with perfect conditions from bloom to harvest and naturally low yields that gave wines great intensity, colour and fruit. Gary and Nancy Figgins founded Leonetti in 1977 as Walla Walla's first bonded winery, naming it for Gary's grandparents. This vintage was made a few years before Chris Figgins became head winemaker in 2001. If you think serious Washington Cabernet is a recent thing, this bottle makes a good case that it isn't.
