Martha Stoumen's idea for Post Flirtation Red is refreshingly simple: take California's classic old-vine Zinfandel-Carignan blend and make it lighter, so you end up with a red you chill and pour with whatever's on the stove. Recent vintages have been made that way, with the grapes picked just ripe and pressed off their skins early so the tannins stay soft. Stoumen learned her trade as Chris Brockway's assistant winemaker at Broc Cellars and at COS in Vittoria, Sicily. Since launching her own label in 2014, she has bought from a small handful of growers who farm organically and without irrigation. In the cellar she does as little as possible: native yeasts and bacteria, vegan wines, and no additions apart from a small dose of sulfites in some of them. She calls herself a "small fish in a big pond," making about 8,000 cases a year in a Sebastopol winery she shares with friends, including Pax and RAEN. (The name came from her husband, Jon Patch, after their first few dates. He drew the label, too.) This is the red in her core range, an everyday bottle from a producer who takes the everyday seriously.

Perfect Pairings

Grilled Italian sausages with peppers; tacos al pastor; margherita or mushroom pizza; roast chicken with herbs; grilled salmon with a sweet-tart glaze; a charcuterie board with salami and marinated olives.

Tasting Profile

Expect a light, chillable red in the spirit of a lighter take on California's classic Zinfandel-Carignan blend: bright red fruit with hibiscus, pomegranate and rhubarb, a touch of baking spice and a savoury, wild-herb edge. Typically juicy and fresh, with soft tannins and lively acidity, finishing dry, clean and easy alongside almost anything from the kitchen.
