More about Le Petit Vauthier

The Vauthier family has done an incredible service for the world of wine. They are principally known for their stewardship of Château Ausone, one of the greatest properties in Saint-Émilion, and one that is most tightly connected to a traditionalist approach in the cellar.

But their contributions go far beyond Château Ausone. We have also written about their property Château Simard. Here we focus on another Saint-Émilion in their stable. Yet again, it represents an incredible value in back vintage, traditionally-styled Saint-Émilion.

They call this wine “Petit Vauthier”, a name intended to emphasize its close links to the Vauthier family. Simard is a large property where the family has simply allowed Saint-Émilion traditions to continue, relatively unimpeded. But at Petit Vauthier, there is an effort to stamp the wine with the “Ausone” imprimatur.

If Simard is old-fashioned, perhaps even backwards, the Petit Vauthier has been somewhat updated. It is not “polished” in the sense of a modern St. Emilion with shiny new oak, but rather elegant in a more Burgundian manner, with a focus on purity of fruit and fine structure.
