The Gramolere vineyard, perched in the hills of Monforte d’Alba, is known for its compact clay-limestone soils and southeast exposure—yielding Barolo with firm tannins, brooding fruit, and long aging arcs. Fratelli Alessandria, based in Verduno but now working several prized crus across Barolo, approaches this site with traditional winemaking: long macerations, ambient yeast, and aging in large Slavonian oak botti.

The 2020 vintage brings freshness and focus to Gramolere’s usual muscle. Aromas of black cherry, rose petal, and forest floor lead into a structured palate of dark berries, iron, and dried herbs. The tannins are firm but beautifully shaped, and the acidity keeps everything lifted. It’s a wine that feels grounded but not heavy—more poised than powerful.

Cellar for 5–20 years, or decant now with rich dishes like braised beef, truffled risotto, or aged cheeses. For Barolo lovers who appreciate terroir nuance and age-worthy classicism, Fratelli Alessandria’s Gramolere 2020 is a standout expression from one of the region’s rising benchmark producers.

The small village of Verduno is the home of Pelaverga, but less than a dozen local producers have stayed true to Verduno’s special grape. It’s this sun-bleached hamlet, kissed by the breezes coming off the river Tanaro, that the Alessandria family calls home.

The Alessandria "brothers" have been farming grapes and making Barolo in the ancient village of Verduno since the 1800's. Indeed they and some of their neighbors were among the very first to bottle the dry, complex and age-worthy Nebbiolo that Barolo is now famous for. Today, the actual brothers are Gian Battista and Alessandro, with Alessandro's son Vittore increasingly at the helm, and they work together much the same as their familly has for generations.

Farming is crucial: they use organic principles in all of their 30 hectares of vineyards.

Professional Reviews

Antonio Galloni

AG 93
"The 2020 Barolo Gramolere is laced with hints of dried cherry, menthol, spice, dried herbs and a whole range of balsamic inflections that add character. Like all the 2020s here, the Gramolere shows good vineyard character, but in a decidedly slender, light style relative to most years." -Antonio Galloni

"With fruit from Monforte d'Alba, the Fratelli Alessandria 2020 Barolo Gramolere is slight and lean in terms of mouthfeel and has aromas of blackcurrant, crushed stone and grilled herb. This vintage is certainly shorter than previous years, although there is lots of nice freshness. The Gramolere is poised for a short to medium-term drinking window." -Monica Larner

"Just mid-ruby. Stylistically very different from Verduno. It has a similar balsamic character and is a tiny bit richer on the nose with a distinct mineral core. Compact fruit that is still closed and has a layer of sandy tannins that follow the fruit seamlessly. Elegant, fresh and long, it will reveal itself fully in the next couple of years." -Walter Speller

"Picture yourself savoring a glass of this exquisite wine, as a harmonious blend of macerated cherries and savory roasted mushrooms dance on your palate. The umami-rich flavors intertwine with dried flowers and shaved rosewood, creating a sophisticated and alluring bouquet. This wine is a true embodiment of elegance, with a presence that effortlessly captivates your senses."

What importer Bowler Wine has to say about this wine...

The cru of Gramolere, located in Monforte d’Alba, is Fratelli Alessandria’s lone plot outside of Verduno. They own 2ha here. The wine is made exactly as the other two single-cru wines. As it’s on the older Arenarie di Diano D’Alba soils, high in sand, and the altitude is higher, this wine tends to feel more lithe and tense than its Verduno counterparts.
