Michel Drappier's family has made Champagne in Urville since 1808, and his grandfather Georges Collot—nicknamed "le Père Pinot"—pioneered the replanting of Pinot Noir in the Côte des Bar in the 1930s. That Pinot Noir dominance defines the house style: Carte d'Or is eighty percent Pinot Noir with fifteen percent Chardonnay and five percent Meunier, all first-press juice from Kimmeridgian limestone soils. This Kosher bottling—certified Pareve and Kosher for Passover by the Orthodox Union—is produced with rigorous oversight from pressing onward, yet the wine is indistinguishable in quality from the standard cuvée. Drappier was also Champagne's first carbon-neutral house. Rich, fruit-forward, and generous, with the body and depth that Côte des Bar Pinot Noir delivers. A serious Champagne that happens to be Kosher.

Antonio Galloni

"(85% Pinot Noir, 15% Chardonnay and 5% Pinot Meunier; 7 g/l dosage; LZ57266DG09/13): Light yellow-gold. Pungent aromas of orange pith, dried apple and toasty lees, with a hint of chamomile in the background. Fleshy and broad on entry, then tighter in the middle, offering bitter pear skin and quinine flavors and a touch of blood orange. Finishes with good grip and cut, leaving a subtle smoky note behind." —Josh Raynolds

Robert Parker

"As always, the NV Brut Carte d'Or is a classic, well-executed and perfumed Champagne. It evokes aromas of white peach, ripe orchard fruits, pastry and spices. Medium-bodied, round and enrobing, it's delicately vinous and framed by an elegant mousse, with a lovely, mouthwatering, ripe orchard fruits-inflected finish. This blend of 80% Pinot Noir, 15% Chardonnay and 5% Pinot Meunier was disgorged with 6.5 grams per liter dosage." —Yohan Castaing

Wine Spectator

92 points

"This bright and zesty Champagne is lightly juicy and appealing, offering flavors of Honeycrisp apple, ripe white cherry, biscuit and pickled ginger. Balanced and lacy in texture, with a lingering, spiced finish."

Wine Enthusiast

"The standard nonvintage cuvée from this producer is satisfyingly mature. While it has a crisp side, the blend of mainly Pinot Noir is fruity, with bright apple flavors and a touch of toastiness. It is ready to drink." —Roger Voss

More about Drappier

Drappier is a family Champagne house in Urville, in the Aube, established in 1808 and now led by Michel Drappier. It operates much like a grower: the estate farms its own Pinot Noir with organic and natural practices, keeps heirloom varieties like Fromenteau, Arbanne and Petit Meslier alive, and goes light on dosage and sulfur. Yet it has the reserves of a House, aged in cellars built in 1152 at the behest of Saint Bernard of Clairvaux. Always pushing forward, never settling for the status quo.

Champagne

Champagne boasts some of the world’s greatest luxury brands with Krug, Cristal and, of course, Dom Perignon. But it’s also home to hundreds of small dynamic producers—farmers who grow their own grapes (often organically) and make (often with natural methods) tiny amounts of pure and absolutely delicious wine that reflect the individual personalities of their villages and terroirs. Toast with these wines, for sure. But also treat them like the great wines they are: taste, drink, explore!
