Jacquesson, Champagne Extra Brut "Cuvee 749", NV

Jacquesson numbers this Champagne rather than dating it, and Cuvée 749 is the 2021 harvest with almost nothing added: unfined, unfiltered and finished with just 2 grams per liter of dosage, so there's very little sugar to hide behind. That was a brave choice for 2021, a hard year. After a cool spring with some frost came heavy thunderstorms in mid-June and mid-July, and mildew was a threat all season. Dry weather returned in mid-August and brought the grapes to full ripeness for a harvest that ran from 20 September to 1 October. Most of the fruit (72%) comes from Aÿ, Dizy, Hautvillers and Champillon, and the other 28% from Avize and Oiry. Chardonnay leads the blend, and the house adds 28% reserve wine drawn from Cuvées 748 back to 743 (skipping 745) to give it depth. It's fermented and aged in vats. Jacquesson farms 28 hectares without herbicides and has built its name on low-dosage Champagnes that show where they're grown. This is the bottle for anyone who wants to taste Champagne itself rather than a recipe.

"The NV Extra-Brut Cuvée No. 749 (base 2021) is laced with hints of tropical fruit, dried flowers, chamomile, passion fruit and lightly honeyed overtones. Open-knit aromatics are immediately expansive, giving the wine palpable textural breadth. The No. 749 is soft, open-knit and very easy to drink."

More about Jacquesson

Founded in 1798 by Memmie Jacquesson in Châlons-sur-Marne, Jacquesson calls itself the oldest independent Champagne house. Its modern reputation was built by brothers Jean-Hervé and Laurent Chiquet, whose father Jean bought the house in 1974, and who moved toward organic farming, more oak fermentation and very low dosage, usually 2 to 5 grams per liter. In 2022 the house passed to Artémis Domaines. These are terroir-driven, complex Champagnes that prove bubbles don't need sweetness to sing.

Raw oysters with mignonette; scallop crudo with lemon and olive oil; warm gougères; aged Comté; shrimp tempura; sole meunière.

Tasting Profile

Expect a very dry, Chardonnay-led Champagne with citrus, green apple and white flowers up front, plus a little red-fruit weight from the Pinot Noir and Meunier. Reserve wines typically add nutty, toasty depth. With almost no added sugar, look for fine bubbles, a medium body, taut chalky acidity and a long, saline finish.

Champagne

Champagne boasts some of the world’s greatest luxury brands with Krug, Cristal and, of course, Dom Perignon. But it’s also home to hundreds of small dynamic producers—farmers who grow their own grapes (often organically) and make (often with natural methods) tiny amounts of pure and absolutely delicious wine that reflect the individual personalities of their villages and terroirs. Toast with these wines, for sure. But also treat them like the great wines they are: taste, drink, explore!
