A still red from Champagne is a curiosity worth chasing, and this one comes from a family that has never been interested in covering anything up: pure Pinot Noir from a single quarter-hectare of organically farmed vines in the lieu-dit Grand Picou, in the Vallée de la Marne village of Saint-Agnan. Tarlant was bottling zero-dosage Champagne back in the 1970s, when everyone thought they were insane, and about 90% of what they make still gets no added sugar. The same no-makeup instinct shows up in this red. The grapes were picked by hand and destemmed, fermented with native yeasts over a two-week maceration with only gentle punchdowns, then aged on fine lees in Burgundy barrels and bottled unfined and unfiltered, with minimal sulfur. Grand Picou's subsoil is hard Lutetian limestone, on a south-facing slope sculpted by the Surmelin river. The vines there are a massale selection planted in 1982 by Suzanne and Maurice Boiselle, the family's grandparents on the maternal side, together with Jean-Mary Tarlant. A parcel that small never yields much, so this is one for the Pinot lover curious to taste the Marne without the bubbles.

More about Tarlant

Tarlant was making zero dosage Champagne in the 1970s when everyone thought they were insane. Decades later, they're still 90% no-dosage, letting 'time be their dosage' through long élevage. These are some of Champagne's most refreshing, honest bubbles.

Flatiron's Take

From the Importer

What Bowler Wine has to say about this wine:

100% Pinot Noir. From a 0.25-hectare parcel of organically farmed estate vines in the lieu-dit of Grand Picou in the village of St. Agnan in the Vallée de la Marne. The clusters were harvested by hand and destemmed; the berries were spontaneously fermented in barrel with a two-week maceration and very gentle punchdowns. The wine was aged on its fine lees in Burgundy barrels for 27 months and bottled without fining or filtering and minimal sulfur. Only 883 bottles made.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Roast chicken with morels or chanterelles; seared duck breast with a cherry sauce; mushroom risotto; pan-roasted salmon with lentils; a cheese board with Chaource or Comté.

Tasting Profile

Expect the classic Coteaux Champenois Rouge profile: a pale, light-bodied Pinot Noir with red cherry, raspberry and redcurrant, a little earth and forest floor, and a chalky, mineral edge. Acidity is typically bright, tannins fine and gentle, with a subtle touch of barrel spice. Think a leaner, cooler-climate red Burgundy, finishing dry, fresh and savoury.
