Pian dell’Orino’s 2021 Rosso di Montalcino is 100% Sangiovese from biodynamically farmed vineyards at 320–500 meters elevation. Soils are rich in marl and limestone, with volcanic influence.

Fermented with native yeasts and macerated in concrete, the wine is aged for over two years in large oak casks. Refined and structured, it shows red cherry, blood orange, and mineral grip—Rosso with Brunello-like pedigree.

Antonio Galloni

"Just bottled two weeks ago, the 2021 Rosso di Montalcino lifts from the glass with a pretty blend of cedary spices, dried cherries and sage hints. This is cool-toned and racy in feel, with crisp red berry fruits and exotic spice that flourish toward the close. It leaves a coating of fine tannins and a pleasantly chewy sensation while tapering off with ample length and concentration. While incredibly young and still a bit shocked, the 2021 is packed full of potential." —Eric Guido

"This beautiful wine will be released in March 2025 with 4,666 bottles produced. The Pian dell'Orino 2021 Rosso di Montalcino is extremely focused and precise. It remains a little closed at this young stage, but that quality gives us even more confidence in a successful bottle evolution. Fruit is sourced from various vineyard plots. There is a hint of greenness that should relax with time, and the wine shows tart cherry fruit, rye bread and a hint of red beer." —Monica Larner

"First tart and bright with dried cranberries, cherries and orange peel on the nose, then aromas of damp earth, mushrooms, old leather and cigar wrapper take over with just a whisper of vanilla bean. The palate offers blackberries, dark chocolate and notes of forest floor ignited by heat and acid."

More about Pian dell'Orino

From single most exciting young estate to one of Montalcino's best. Caroline Pobitzer and Jan Hendrik Erbach planted their first vines in 1998, farming organically from the start and biodynamically since 2003. Their six hectares produce Rosso di Montalcino and Brunello (under vineyard designations) that taste spontaneously fermented, unoaked, and utterly alive. Small, serious, worth hunting for.

Flatiron's Take

From the Importer

What Polaner Selections has to say about this wine:

VineyardThe grapes for this wine come from the vineyards Scopeta, Pian dell’Orino and Pian Bassolino, which are situated from 320 m to 500 m above sea level; the age of these vines was from 13 to18 years at the time of harvest.OrientationScopeta - 340m in elevation. Southeast exposition. Pian dell'Orino - 501m in elevation. South-Southeast exposition. Pian Bassolino - 340m in elevation.Southwest exposition.ViticultureCertified biodynamicVinificationOnly healthy and ripe berries end in the vinification vat. Spontaneous fermentation started in one day, reaching a maximum temperature of 32°C, and taking 21 days until completion. The young wine then macerated for other 10 days on the skins.AgingAfter racking, the young wine was aged for 28 months in 25 hl oak barrels. The malolactic fermentation set in immediately following the alcoholic fermentation still in the fermentation vat. As always no artificial yeast or other enzymatic or technological additives were used during the whole winemaking process.

Tasting Profile

Tuscan red with dark cherry, plum, and earthy mineral notes. Medium-full body with bright dark fruit, fine tannins, balanced acidity, and a savory finish.

Tuscany is an ancient land and Montalcino winemaking tradition runs deep. Which makes Jan Erbach and Caroline Pobitzer miracle workers of a sort.

Neither of them are locals (he’s German and she’s from Alto Adige), and yet their little estate has gone from being an exciting young estate to being one of Montalcino's flat out best.

Of course, they haven’t done it alone. They became tight friends with Stella di Campalto and Francesco Leanza (founder of Podere Salicutti), both of whom also began making wine in the ‘90s. They all share a passion for Sangiovese, organic and biodynamic farming, and the terroir of Montalcino. They even started an organization, Sangiovese Per Amico, to increase understanding and appreciation of the grape and its wines.

Erbach, who trained as a winemaker in Germany, makes the wines with a very light touch. It helps that the wine has the sort of effortless complexity that comes from diverse soils (clay, calcerous, stony) and different expositions and elevations (as high as 500 masl).
