Taittinger remains one of the few major Champagne houses still owned and managed by the family whose name appears on the label. Pierre Taittinger, a cavalry officer stationed in Champagne during World War I, fell in love with the region and acquired the house in 1931. After a brief sale in 2005, the family reclaimed ownership the following year. Today, great-grandchildren Vitalie and Clovis Taittinger run operations. The house controls nearly 300 hectares across 37 cru vineyards—unusual self-sufficiency for a producer of this scale. Brut La Française showcases the house style: 40% Chardonnay (unusually high for non-vintage Champagne), 35% Pinot Noir, and 25% Meunier, sourced from over 35 villages. The wine ages nearly four years on the lees, more than double the legal requirement, achieving a refinement that belies its position as the entry-level cuvée. Serve well-chilled as an aperitif or with oysters and lighter seafood.

Professional Reviews

Antonio Galloni

AG 89
"Light gold. Poached pear, peach, orange and honey on the fruity nose. Broad and fleshy on entry, then tighter and more tangy in the mid-palate, offering juicy citrus and orchard fruit flavors with subtle ginger and toasted grain nuances. Shows a supple, round character on the finish, with the ginger and peach notes repeating. Note that this bottling is labelled as "Reserve" for every country aside from the United States. In fact, I tasted a bottle labeled as such here in New York this fall, from Lot L3348NA9200. How it wound up here, I've no idea." -Josh Raynolds

Robert Parker

"The latest rendition of the NV Brut La Française is showing well, evoking aromas of confit citrus, herbs, spring blossoms and pastry. Medium to full-bodied, enveloping and fleshy, it's perfectly balanced, with bright acids and a mouthwatering, delicate finish." -Yohan Castaing

Wine Spectator

WS 90
"A bright Champagne in an aperitif style, with the lively mousse carrying an appealing, easy-drinking mix of poached white cherry, pastry cream and candied ginger notes." -Alison Napjus

Champagne

Champagne boasts some of the world’s greatest luxury brands with Krug, Cristal and, of course, Dom Perignon. But it’s also home to hundreds of small dynamic producers—farmers who grow their own grapes (often organically) and make (often with natural methods) tiny amounts of pure and absolutely delicious wine that reflect the individual personalities of their villages and terroirs. Toast with these wines, for sure. But also treat them like the great wines they are: taste, drink, explore!
