Alvina Pernot's Saint-Aubin Premier Cru Les Combes represents a fascinating chapter in Burgundy's evolving narrative—this 2023 marks the final vintage of this particular cuvée, as the domaine redirects its focus toward their core Puligny-Montrachet holdings. The vineyard sits just below the renowned Premier Cru En Remilly, benefiting from similar exposition while offering a more accessible expression of this celebrated terroir.

The Pernot family has built their reputation around Puligny Premier Crus, each expressing distinct characteristics of their respective sites. Les Combes serves as an intriguing counterpoint to these prestigious holdings, showcasing how Saint-Aubin's limestone-rich soils can produce wines of remarkable precision and character. The domaine's meticulous approach to viticulture and winemaking—honed through generations of working Puligny's most demanding sites—brings exceptional clarity to this Saint-Aubin expression.

For collectors, this wine offers both immediate pleasure and historical significance as the concluding vintage of a site that has quietly contributed to Alvina Pernot's growing reputation. The 2023 vintage captures the essence of what makes Saint-Aubin compelling: the mineral backbone and elegance of great Burgundian Chardonnay, presented with the accessibility that has made this appellation increasingly sought after by discerning wine lovers.

Professional Reviews

Antonio Galloni

AG 92
"Located on the Gamay side of the appellation (village, not variety), the 2023 Saint-Aubin Les Combes 1er Cru has a very pleasant, finely delineated bouquet: hints of yellow plum and grapefruit, a touch of cold steel. The palate is well balanced with a touch of wild peach on the entry. Slivers of freshly sliced pear and lemon peel develop toward the finish, with just a prickle of spice on the aftertaste. Delicious." -Neal Martin
