From the heart of Austria’s Leithaberg, this 2020 Blaufränkisch from Prieler is a stunning expression of the variety, highlighting the unique qualities of the region’s terroir. Known for its combination of richness and minerality, this wine offers depth and precision with every sip.

The nose reveals a bouquet of ripe dark berries—blackberries, plums, and cherries—complemented by earthy notes of tobacco, spice, and a touch of graphite. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied yet elegant, with smooth tannins that add structure and balance to the rich fruit flavors. A vibrant acidity provides freshness, while the mineral backbone gives the wine an intriguing complexity. The finish is long and layered, leaving lingering notes of dark fruit and subtle earthiness.

This Blaufränkisch is a perfect match for roasted meats, grilled vegetables, or a hearty stew. It’s drinking beautifully now but has the potential to evolve with age, offering even more depth and nuance as it matures.

More about Prieler

Burgenland winemaker revitalizing Austria's Blaufränkisch tradition. Georg Prieler inherited a historic farm in 1972 and transformed it into a serious red wine producer. Their St. Laurent and Blaufränkisch show real depth—austere, mineral-driven wines that demand beef and time in the glass.

Tasting Profile

Deep red color with dark cherry and spice aromas, herbaceous notes. Medium-to-full body with firm tannins and good acidity, providing structure and complexity.

Georg takes his role as farmer and winemaker of his family domain very seriously, but has an easy laugh and relaxed manner. Blaufränkisch, the Burgenland's terroir-transparent grape, is the crown jewel of the estate and given several single vineyard bottlings. Pinot Blanc and Chardonnay, Burgundian varietals, which have a centuries long history in the region are their main whites. Farming is practicing organic and cellar work is hands off with fermentation and aging in large, neutral, traditional Slovenian oak casks.
