This is a sweet Sélection des Grains Nobles Gewurztraminer from Altenbourg, a single hillside that Weinbach says produces exceptional Gewurztraminer. It comes from 2002, so it has more than twenty years in the bottle, and dessert wines this serious rarely get the chance to age that long. Altenbourg is in Kientzheim, at 220 to 300 metres on a gentle slope just below Grand Cru Furstentum. Its marl, limestone and sandstone soils are like Furstentum's but sandier, so the grapes ripen a little earlier. That makes it a natural site for the very ripe fruit an SGN needs. The "Cuvée des Capucins" name points back to the Capuchin monks who built the domaine in 1612. The name Weinbach means "wine stream," after the little brook that still runs through the property. Open it slowly and give it a small glass and a good reason, either at the end of a big dinner or with a cheese course that deserves it.

More about Weinbach

Why does Alsace get overlooked? The answer is maybe it actually doesn't anymore. A lot of our sommelier friends come by the shop to see what is new in Alsace, which means they're putting the wines on top wine lists too. So it's only a matter of time before the press catches up.

And in truth the top domaines have always been sought out among collectors. Domaine Weinbach is in the very top tier (with Trimbach and Humbrecht).

Weinbach has a long tradition of excellence (over 400 years long!) in producing wines in the heart of what is considered Alsace's best terroir. The Domaine's original vineyard, Clos du Capucins, sits at the foot of the Grand Cru Schlossberg which was the first Grand Cru in Alsace. Their style is to pure and transparent: emphasizing terroir and elegance over power.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Seared or terrine-style foie gras with fig compote; washed-rind Munster with toasted cumin seed; Roquefort or Fourme d'Ambert; tarte Tatin; mango or passion fruit tart; spiced poached pears.

Tasting Profile

Expect the classic Alsace Sélection des Grains Nobles profile: lychee, rose petal and candied orange, deepened by the honey, apricot and gentle spice that noble rot brings. It's rich and unctuous, but in Weinbach's style there's enough freshness to keep it from feeling heavy, and the finish is long and honeyed. Think the richness of Sauternes with Gewurztraminer's exotic perfume.
