This is a sweet, late-harvest Riesling from the hill Domaine Weinbach sits right beneath, and it has more than twenty years in bottle. You get to drink a mature Alsace dessert wine without having to cellar it yourself. Vendanges Tardives is the Alsace term for late harvest: the grapes stay on the vine longer and the wine is made in a richer, sweeter style. Weinbach sits at the foot of the Schlossberg and is named for the little stream that runs through the property. The estate files its Schlossberg Rieslings as Grand Cru. The history here goes back a long way. There have been vines on the site since the 9th century, and Capuchin friars founded the winery in 1612. Save a 2002 like this for the cheese course or a special dessert, and pour small glasses so everyone at the table gets a taste.

More about Weinbach

Why does Alsace get overlooked? The answer is maybe it actually doesn't anymore. A lot of our sommelier friends come by the shop to see what is new in Alsace, which means they're putting the wines on top wine lists too. So it's only a matter of time before the press catches up.

And in truth the top domaines have always been sought out among collectors. Domaine Weinbach is in the very top tier (with Trimbach and Humbrecht).

Weinbach has a long tradition of excellence (over 400 years long!) in producing wines in the heart of what is considered Alsace's best terroir. The Domaine's original vineyard, Clos du Capucins, sits at the foot of the Grand Cru Schlossberg which was the first Grand Cru in Alsace. Their style is to pure and transparent: emphasizing terroir and elegance over power.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Foie gras terrine with brioche; washed-rind Munster or a wedge of Roquefort; tarte Tatin or a poached-pear tart; Alsatian apple strudel; mildly spicy Thai or Sichuan dishes with a touch of sweetness.

Tasting Profile

Expect the classic Alsace Vendanges Tardives Riesling profile: ripe apricot, candied citrus peel, honey and a floral, stony edge, along with the toasty, petrol-tinged notes Riesling typically picks up with bottle age. It's rich and sweet, but Riesling's bright acidity keeps it lively, and it usually finishes long, with the sweetness balanced rather than cloying.
