Pursued by Bear is the wine project of actor Kyle MacLachlan, who fell in love with Washington State wine while growing up in Yakima. The “Bear Cub” bottling is his more approachable, early-drinking red—a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and often a touch of Syrah or Cab Franc, depending on the vintage.

The 2021 vintage comes from top vineyards in the Columbia Valley, including sites in Horse Heaven Hills and Red Mountain, known for bold, sun-kissed fruit and firm structure. The wine is aged in French oak barrels, with a modest portion of new oak (typically under 30%) to add richness without overpowering the fruit.

In the glass, it shows dark berry fruit, cocoa, baking spice, and a touch of cedar, with soft tannins and a smooth finish. It’s plush and polished but not overdone—built for easy drinking but still has enough backbone to pair with burgers, roast meats, or hearty pasta dishes.

Great for weeknight dinners or movie-night bottles, it delivers a bit of star power without the Hollywood price tag.

"The Bear Cub scampers, fueled by floral aromas of hyacinth, rose petals and dark raspberries. Nicely balanced, with silky tannins and elevated acidity, this ursine juvenile offers the ripest red and black fruit flavors this side of Jellystone Park. Additional flavors of dark chocolate, espresso, coconut and cedar are tastier than the average bear." —Michael Alberty

More about Pursued by Bear

Actor Kyle MacLachlan's winery in downtown Walla Walla, inspired by Shakespeare's stage directions. The tasting room is vibrant pink, the Cabernet and Syrah are serious, and the whole thing has the vibe of someone who actually cares—not just collecting wineries as status.

Tasting Profile

Dark cherry and plum with spice and herb notes. Medium-to-full body with soft tannins and balanced acidity, creating an approachable, fruit-forward wine.

The story of Pursued by Bear starts with a journey: actor Kyle Maclachlan returned to Washington's Columbia Valley, to make wine a stone's throw away from where he grew up. This journey began in 2005, and now his passion for great wine is undeniable.

In choosing styles and varieties, Kyle and winemaker Eric Dampfler did not stray far from the classics — they embraced Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah for their red wines; for their delightful rosé, the pair went with a pale, Provençal-style blend of Grenache and Mourvèdre, inspired by the classic rosés of Bandol.
