Champs Fulliot picks up right where Volnay's celebrated Clos des Chênes leaves off, and it carries the far quieter name of Monthelie. That's a big part of why we love it. Changarnier's parcel here covers just 44 ares, planted in 1979 and facing south to south-east. The soil is clay and limestone, with only 20 to 30 cm of red clay sitting right on the bedrock, and the domaine says that thin soil gives a very delicate wine. It's a tiny cuvée. Brothers Claude and Antoine Changarnier, whose family founded the domaine in 1720, farm organically with Fabrice Groussin. For the reds, Groussin isn't chasing maximum extraction or colour. The 2023 was made with 50% whole bunches, and the house picks by hand. If you love Volnay's perfume but would rather not pay for the famous name, this is exactly the kind of bottle we go looking for.

"The 2023 Monthélie Champs Fulliot 1er Cru has a wonderful bouquet with raspberry, crushed strawberry and rose petal scents, the 50% whole bunch very well integrated. The palate is medium-bodied, finely structured and saline, with sappy red fruit and an almost Volnay-like finish. Excellent." —Neal Martin

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Roast chicken with morels or chanterelles; duck breast with a cherry sauce; wild mushroom risotto; jambon persillé; roast quail; aged Comté.

Tasting Profile

Expect a perfumed, delicate Monthelie Pinot Noir: violets, blackcurrant and red cherry, with a gentle savoury, earthy edge. It's typically medium-bodied and elegant, with fresh, crunchy acidity and fine tannins that give it the structure to age. Think of a quieter cousin of Volnay, finishing silky and dry.
