The first red 1er Cru bottled directly from Domaine Prudhon in the early 1980s, Les Frionnes marks the beginning of the domaine's bottling legacy. From a one-hectare parcel on the hillside between Saint-Aubin and Gamay with 50-year-old vines and east-southeast exposure, this wine exemplifies Prudhon's philosophy: total destemming, spontaneous fermentation for 10-12 days, less than 10% new oak over 15-18 months. Rich and full-bodied yet expressing the raciness and brightness characteristic of Saint-Aubin, it balances concentration with terroir-loyal restraint.

More about Henri Prudhon

Saint-Aubin hides just behind Puligny and Chassagne, sharing their hillsides while flying under the radar. Henri Prudhon, born there in 1921, founded this domaine in 1945 when he and his wife Marguerite combined their vines. In the early 1980s their son Gérard began bottling instead of selling to négociants, and Neal Rosenthal has imported every vintage since 1983. Gérard's sons Vincent and Philippe now farm 14.5 hectares with minimal intervention, barrel-fermenting the whites slowly in cool cellars. Pure, classic and remarkably priced.

Flatiron's Take

From the Importer

Like the Perrieres in white, the Frionnes in red was the first of the 1er Cru Saint Aubins to be bottled for sale directly from the domaine in the early 1980s. The vines are from a one hectare parcel on a hillside vineyard situated between Saint Aubin and Gamay. The vine age is 50 years on average and the exposure is east-southeast. The Prudhons give this intensely fruity wine less aging in barrel (virtually no new oak) and bottle this cuvée just prior to the next year’s harvest.
