This is the last Clos des Ducs Jacques d'Angerville made. He died in July 2003 after 52 harvests, so 2002 was his final vintage of the wine his family calls its "grand vin." Clos des Ducs is an enclosed Volnay 1er Cru monopole that an early 16th-century act already lists as part of the former domain of the Dukes of Burgundy, and it is still exactly the 52 ouvrées (2.15 hectares) measured back then. An ouvrée was the patch one vigneron could work alone in a day, so this is a vineyard measured in human labour. The vines grow on a steep, well-drained slope facing south-east, in poor, stony, strongly calcareous white marl. Jacques and Sem spent years selecting vines, and in the early 1950s their work was recognised as a fine, low-yielding strain called "Pinot d'Angerville." When Guillaume took over from his father, his first instinct was to change nothing and keep making the wines in Jacques's spirit. The family says Clos des Ducs is a slow-moving wine for the cellar that only reaches its fullness at about ten years, and great vintages need longer. A 2002 is now more than twice that age, which makes it a rare chance to taste what this wine was built for.

More about Marquis d'Angerville

Volnay's archetypal name-producer for over a century, Marquis d'Angerville remains one of Burgundy's most consistent voices. These Pinot Noirs sit in the sweet spot between aromatic seduction and structural power—wines that open gracefully and age beautifully. The domaine's vineyard holdings represent some of Volnay's finest sites. Classic stuff, made the traditional way by people who know the terroir intimately—and it still works.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Roast squab or pigeon with a jus; duck breast with a cherry sauce; coq au vin; wild mushroom and thyme tart; veal chop with morels; aged Comté.

Tasting Profile

Expect the classic Volnay 1er Cru profile: red cherry, raspberry and violet over a stony, mineral edge from the limestone-rich marl. Clos des Ducs is typically the firmer, more structured side of Volnay, medium-bodied with fine tannins and fresh acidity. With long bottle age it tends toward forest floor, dried petals and leather, finishing long and silky.
