La Landonne 2021 by René Rostaing is a pure Syrah grown on one of Côte-Rôtie’s steepest, most iconic slopes, known for iron-oxide-rich schist soils that produce wines of density, spice, and longevity. Rostaing’s parcel comes from old vines passed down from both Marius Gentaz-Dervieux and Albert Dervieux, legends in the region whose DNA still runs through this bottling.

The 2021 vintage, cooler and later than the past decade’s solar run, gave Rostaing the chance to make a more classic, lifted expression. Fermented with whole clusters and aged in large, old oak, the wine is intensely aromatic but brooding, with notes of black olive, smoked meat, dark berries, cracked pepper, and cold granite. The tannins are firm but elegant, suggesting long cellaring—15 to 30+ years.

This is Syrah in its purest, most uncompromising form, unadorned and terroir-driven. It pairs beautifully with braised lamb, charred vegetables, or aged hard cheeses, and benefits greatly from long decanting or bottle aging.

Rostaing inherited prize parcels in Cote Rotie from his father-in-law, Albert Dervieux, and uncle, Marius Gentaz. He went on to become a legend of his own. His son, Pierre, took over in 2015 and pushed the domaine in a more traditional direction. The high quality has gotten even higher.

Professional Reviews

Jancis Robinson

JR 17.5
"Cask sample. Bright, juicy nose, a little spicy – white pepper, plums and spice. Very fine tannins. Saline. Good density of fruit as well and a savoury, leafy note on the finish. Refined, restrained but still with a tight structure. Long, and will provide so much pleasure in a light style."

"Graphite, iron and pencil lead come before the blackberry fruit here – a very mineral aromatic expression, almost austere. Medium-bodied but with good presence on the palate and some sweetness to the berry fruits. A compact, dry and mineral expression. La Landonne is always strict, but this really is austere. The whole-bunch element is marked, and the tannins are fine and plentiful but very tense and dry. This needs a long time, don't drink it too young. The only single-vineyard bottlings in 2021 will be La Landonne and Côte Blonde - and that's if they are not eventually blended into Ampodium."
