This is aromatic Alsace for people who assume aromatic Alsace has to be sweet. Bungertal is dry and unfiltered. The vines grow on a steep, south-facing lieu-dit in the neighbouring village of Nothalten, where sandstone and volcanic bedrock break through light, very stony soil. Florian and Mathilde credit that sunny slope for the wine's exotic, spicy streak, and their own word for the style is "baroque." The family has made wine since 1590 and keeps the estate to 11 acres so they can do every job themselves, down to picking by hand. Pull the cork an hour ahead, serve it around 12°C, and decant if there's too much natural spritz.

Tasting Profile

Expect a dry, full-bodied Alsace white with Gewurztraminer's lychee, honeysuckle and exotic spice, sharpened by Riesling's citrus and lift. The palate typically runs rich and textured, with a salty, stony edge, a light grip of tannin and a long, spicy finish. Think classic aromatic Gewurztraminer without the sweetness, kept fresh by Riesling's acidity.
