Peter Lauer has become the Saar's rising star, making thrilling, affordable Rieslings that capture everything exciting about modern German wine. Fass 6 "Senior" is one of the estate's most beloved bottlings, named the old-fashioned way for the cask (Fass) it comes from. Flatiron calls it endlessly drinkable, and that's the point: it's an off-dry (feinherb), mineral Saar Riesling that tastes dry but with a hint of fruit, with the kind of energy and precision that makes you reach for a second glass. From slate-rich slopes along the Saar, it delivers serious terroir at an everyday price.

More about Peter Lauer

Peter Lauer in Ayl is one of the Saar's reference estates. Florian Lauer, the fifth generation, took over from his father in 2006 and put it firmly on the map; it joined the VDP in 2013. Thirteen hectares, all Riesling, from great sites like Kupp, Saarfeilser and Schonfels. No herbicides, wild-yeast fermentation and no fining agents. Every wine carries a Fass number, because each vineyard ferments in the same cask every year. Serious Riesling at prices that don't require a second mortgage.

Tasting Profile

Off-dry but racy, with green apple, citrus, white peach, and a stony, slate-driven minerality. Bright, mouthwatering acidity and a clean, refreshing finish.

Mineral forward riesling

Off dry riesling with nice acidity and a stony minerality on the tongue. This almost tastes more like an aged wine! This is one of my favourite riesling's I've ever tried!

WINE GUIDES

German Wines

Is there a better grape than Riesling? Is there a better value? Its fruit purity, its perfume, and its mineral nuance are all unparalleled. And for centuries, the top German Rieslings were priced accordingly: at least as expensive as the top red wines of Bordeaux and Burgundy. But nowadays you could spend a lifetime exploring Germany’s great Riesling-producing regions while staying well within your budget. You might take an occasional break to try Germany’s other white grapes or perhaps a glass of Spätburgunder (the local name for Pinot Noir). It’s time to get started!
