Ulli Stein has spent his career defending vineyards most sane people would refuse to climb. Trained in oenology at Geisenheim with a doctorate in biology on top, he has become the loudest advocate for the Mosel's near-vertical slate terraces at a time when plenty of growers were happy to abandon them. Blauschiefer means blue slate, the stone these vines dig into, and Trocken means dry - no hedging, no residual sugar to soften the edges. Expect lemon and green apple, a smoky mineral streak, and acidity that arrives like cold water. It is a bracing, honest introduction to one of the Mosel's great holdouts.

More about Stein

Ulli Stein is a Mosel rebel who spent eight years battling the wine authorities, from 2001 until EU rules changed in 2009, for the right to make traditional straw wine. He farms about 6.5 hectares of steep slate around Alf and Sankt Aldegund, including the vertiginous Palmberg terraces, and most of his Riesling vines are ungrafted, some planted around 1900. The wines run from bone-dry to feinherb and sweet, all with laser-focused precision. Winemaking as defiance.

WINE GUIDES

German Wines

Is there a better grape than Riesling? Is there a better value? Its fruit purity, its perfume, and its mineral nuance are all unparalleled. And for centuries, the top German Rieslings were priced accordingly: at least as expensive as the top red wines of Bordeaux and Burgundy. But nowadays you could spend a lifetime exploring Germany’s great Riesling-producing regions while staying well within your budget. You might take an occasional break to try Germany’s other white grapes or perhaps a glass of Spätburgunder (the local name for Pinot Noir). It’s time to get started!
