Gamet, Champagne Rose Extra Brut, NV

This is a rosé Champagne made only from black grapes and coloured with the Gamet family's own still red wine, which is about as hands-on as pink Champagne gets. Meunier leads with Pinot Noir in support. The fruit comes from the family's vines in three Marne Valley villages: Mardeuil on the left bank, and Fleury-la-Rivière and Damery on the right, all on sand mixed with clay and limestone. The edition built on the 2021 harvest draws on reserve wines going back to 2014. It spends 25 months on its lees and gets a light 5 g/L dosage, so it's dry without tipping into austerity. Fermentations start naturally with a yeast culture grown from the estate's own parcels, so even the yeast is local. With this much volume it belongs at the dinner table as much as at the toast. Marianne Gamet, the fourth generation, has run the estate since 2018, and this bottle is a grounded, generous introduction to what grower Champagne can do with Meunier.

"The NV Brut Rosé is a powerful, vinous Champagne. There's certainly a ton to like. Bright red cherry fruit, chalk, mint, white pepper and orange peel fill out its layers, lifted by bright acids that wrap it all together. This Meunier-driven Rosé is particularly impressive in the 2020 base edition. Dosage is 5 grams per liter."

"A well-cut Champagne, with a lively mousse and a chalk-tinged, minerally overtone, this offers a juicy mix of pureed raspberry, nectarine, grated ginger and almond biscotti notes. Meunier and Pinot Noir. Disgorged November 2022. Drink now. 83 cases imported."

Tasting Profile

Fruity and full-bodied for a rosé Champagne, with a clay-driven minerality that gives it volume on the palate. It stays fresh, and the Extra Brut dosage keeps the finish dry.

Champagne

Champagne boasts some of the world’s greatest luxury brands with Krug, Cristal and, of course, Dom Perignon. But it’s also home to hundreds of small dynamic producers—farmers who grow their own grapes (often organically) and make (often with natural methods) tiny amounts of pure and absolutely delicious wine that reflect the individual personalities of their villages and terroirs. Toast with these wines, for sure. But also treat them like the great wines they are: taste, drink, explore!
