Clos Rougeard is a Loire icon, and the Clos 2017 is among its rarest cuvées. From 70-year-old Cabernet Franc vines on clay-limestone in Chacé, this magnum was aged in barrel for two years and matured in tufa cellars to develop structure and mineral depth.

This flagship bottling is a benchmark for Saumur-Champigny. It delivers layered complexity and long aging potential—an expressive, cellar-worthy Loire red in a rare 1.5L format.

here are some very famous wines that are extremely limited and inspire a cult like following; and then there is Clos Rougeard. The tiny amounts of Cabernet Franc and even tinier amounts of Chenin Blanc that the Foucault brothers make in Saumur-Champigny are among the most rare and sought after bottles in France and now the U.S.

What's the trick? Well it's a bit mysterious but basically they possess very old vines on special terroir. Their yields are tiny, farming is meticulous and the cellar is deep, dank and cold. Those few of us luck enough to visit can attest to layers of mold and caverns of oak barrels with various vintages slowly fermenting or resting for years before bottling.

The wines are stunning. They can age probably forever. And they are extremely limited.

Professional Reviews

Antonio Galloni

"The 2017 Le Clos is a blend of 15 sites across five hectares. It is a richly fragrant, brooding style, with lots of complex layers. Light on its feet, its compact core is rich with texture, and its flavors linger long. There's a meaty edge, olives, dried herbs and a rather drying conclusion, which is a bit suspect and leaves a question mark for its future longevity." -Rebecca Gibb MW

Robert Parker

"Aromas of tomato leaves, licorice, dark wild berries and spices preface the 2017 Saumur Champigny Le Clos, a medium-bodied, supple and suave wine, with a tense and gourmand palate, concluding with a firm finish, which, unfortunately, is marked by carnal notes and somewhat rustic tannins." -Yohan Castaing

"This is worth every penny of its price tag. It has a hushed intensity. It’s mellow, fitting into itself like an old library: dust and shelves, polished coppery red wood and the smell of a warm fireplace. Parchment and pages and ink and leather-bound books. It's sweet and smoky, concentration and power pulsing through the fruit in waves. Damsons, cloves and tobacco-smoke tendrils, cigars. The tannins fan fine and fragrant, across and through, a plethora but in exquisite restraint. This is a real beauty. One of the best wines of the tasting."

"A sense of minerality with gunflint on the nose, almost a tertiary character, giving the impression of a cooler vintage. The palate is quite backward, and the fruit purity has not really come out to the extent of the 2018, so this is much less revealing."
