Clos Rougeard is a venerated Loire estate celebrated for its precise Cabernet Franc expressions. The 2017 Les Poyeux in magnum comes from high-density, 50-year-old vines on clay-limestone soils, hand-harvested and aged two years in barrel before extended maturation in tufa cellars to develop refined minerality and depth.

As a top-tier cuvée, Les Poyeux combines dense structure with poised elegance. It delivers layered herbal complexity and youthful tension, representing a cellar-worthy Loire classic in a rare 1.5 L format.

here are some very famous wines that are extremely limited and inspire a cult like following; and then there is Clos Rougeard. The tiny amounts of Cabernet Franc and even tinier amounts of Chenin Blanc that the Foucault brothers make in Saumur-Champigny are among the most rare and sought after bottles in France and now the U.S.

What's the trick? Well it's a bit mysterious but basically they possess very old vines on special terroir. Their yields are tiny, farming is meticulous and the cellar is deep, dank and cold. Those few of us luck enough to visit can attest to layers of mold and caverns of oak barrels with various vintages slowly fermenting or resting for years before bottling.

The wines are stunning. They can age probably forever. And they are extremely limited.

Professional Reviews

Antonio Galloni

"The 2017 Les Poyeux is a silken, elegant wine that's just starting to turn away from its primary fruits and develop some mellow tertiary characters. Very smooth in texture, an abundance of fine, powdery tannins coats the mouth. The 2017 is long, fragrant and sophisticated, with black fruit, woody herbs, Christmas spices and the merest whiff of nectarine, which I commonly find in Les Poyeux, year in, year out. Excellent." -Rebecca Gibb MW

Robert Parker

"Bright and gourmand, the 2017 Saumur Champigny Les Poyeux exhales aromas of prune, violet, flowers and pepper, followed by a medium to full-bodied, juicy and long structure, finishing dry and rustic due to the presence of Brettanomyces. Nonetheless, it presents a fresher and more fruit-forward profile than its 2018 counterpart, rendering the finish more relaxed." -Yohan Castaing

Jancis Robinson

"Elegant and poised with red-berry and floral notes. As is often the case, a burgundian feel. Huge intensity on the palate, the tannins tight and firm but fine as well. Lovely balance. Should age well."

"The nose is more restrained than Le Clos 2017 or Les Poyeux 2018. There's a small touch of minerality in the background, and a mineral edge to the finish. Very tight on the palate, all the purity of the cuvée is hiding behind the structure; the fruits will shine through in time. This really needs time but should soften to great elegance over some years."
