This is the everyday red from the domaine many consider the finest in Cairanne: a Côtes du Rhône built for fruit and crunch rather than heft. The fruit comes from 14 hectares of hillside and garrigue vineyards the family bought in 2017. Marcel Richaud is a fifth-generation grower. In 1974 he became the first in the family to bottle his own wine instead of selling to the co-op. He went on to become one of the leaders of the natural wine movement (lower sulfur, no fining or filtration), and he's still hang gliding in his 70s. He now runs the domaine with his children, Claire and Thomas. Serious pedigree in an unfussy bottle: the family's own advice is to drink it within two years, so open it rather than cellar it.

More about Marcel Richaud

Marcel Richaud started in Cairanne in 1974 with 14 hectares of his aunt's vines and became one of the founding figures of natural wine in France, often named alongside Pierre Overnoy and Marcel Lapierre. Now retired, he has handed the certified-organic estate, about 60 hectares on clay and round galets, to his children Thomas, Claire and Edith. Grenache-led reds that taste of pure fruit and garrigue, made with a light hand. A Southern Rhône legend.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Roast pheasant, guinea fowl or duck in winter (the family suggests game birds). In summer, côte de boeuf or rib-eye off the barbecue. Lamb merguez with grilled peppers and a Provençal daube also work.

Tasting Profile

Expect a juicy, Grenache-led Southern Rhône red: red cherry, raspberry and plum, with a peppery lift from the Syrah and a hint of dried herbs from the local garrigue. Typically medium-bodied and round, with soft tannins and fresh acidity. It finishes bright and crunchy, built for fruit rather than heft, and is best enjoyed young.
