More about Bernard Magrez

Bernard Magrez is one of Bordeaux's great self-made figures. He left school at 13, built a fortune in spirits and everyday wine, and then spent decades buying some of the region's most storied vineyards. Today he is the sole owner of four classed growths, one each in Pessac-Léognan, the Haut-Médoc, Saint-Émilion and Sauternes, and his group runs some 42 vineyards in nine countries.

Magrez started at the Bordeaux house Cordier at 19. He then founded William Pitters, a spirits business whose William Peel Scotch became the best-selling whisky in France. The jewel of his wine holdings is Château Pape Clément in Pessac. The estate records a harvest as early as 1252 and is named for Bertrand de Goth, who owned the vineyard and became Pope Clement V in 1305. Magrez had full control by 1980. La Tour Carnet, Fombrauge and Clos Haut-Peyraguey came later.

L'Âme de Pape Clément is the entry point to the Pape Clément family, below the grand vin and its second wine, Le Clémentin. It replaced the label once called Le Prélat. The white is mostly Sémillon, with Sauvignon Blanc, Sauvignon Gris and a touch of Muscadelle: round and citrusy, with a mineral edge. Red and white alike are approachable young, and they're a friendly way to taste the Pape Clément style.
