Philip Lardot, Pinot Gris, 2025

This is a Mosel Pinot Gris given a delicate maceration on its skins, made by Philip Lardot, who studied and worked with Ulli Stein before going out on his own. Lardot took the long way to get there. He was born in Finland and raised in Amsterdam, worked for a natural wine importer in Copenhagen and did a harvest in Burgundy, then landed at Clemens Busch in the Mosel. He and his wife, Rosalie Curtin, now farm steep slopes in and around St. Aldegund as natural producers, and their 2025s came out generous yet fresh. If you're curious about skin-contact whites but wary of the wild end of the style, a light touch like this is a friendly way in.

More about Philip Lardot

Philip Lardot was born in Finland, grew up in Amsterdam, moved to Copenhagen to work for a natural wine importer, then went to Burgundy for a harvest before landing in Clemens Busch's vineyard in Moselle. He never left. With wife Rosalie Curtin, he farms five hectares on Moselle's steep slopes as a natural wine producer. The project is small, serious, and built on a path that wandered across Europe before finding its true home in German terroir.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Tarte flambée with bacon and onion; pork schnitzel with a warm potato salad; roast chicken with chanterelles; smoked trout on rye with horseradish cream; a plate of Alsatian-style charcuterie and Comté.

Tasting Profile

Expect ripe pear, yellow apple and a hint of spice, with the gentle grip and subtle savoury edge that a light skin maceration typically brings. The Mosel's cool climate and steep slate slopes usually keep the acidity bright, and the finish should be dry and clean. Think of a Pinot Grigio with more texture and character.

WINE GUIDES

German Wines

Is there a better grape than Riesling? Is there a better value? Its fruit purity, its perfume, and its mineral nuance are all unparalleled. And for centuries, the top German Rieslings were priced accordingly: at least as expensive as the top red wines of Bordeaux and Burgundy. But nowadays you could spend a lifetime exploring Germany’s great Riesling-producing regions while staying well within your budget. You might take an occasional break to try Germany’s other white grapes or perhaps a glass of Spätburgunder (the local name for Pinot Noir). It’s time to get started!
